STI or STD? Know the Difference
The terms are often used interchangeably — here is what they mean, and which infections they cover.
STI vs STD
"STI" (infection) is the more accurate term; "STD" (disease) is used once an infection causes symptoms. In everyday use they mean the same thing.
Common STIs
Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, genital herpes, genital warts (HPV), syphilis and HIV are among the most common. Some cause skin symptoms; many cause none at all.
Get Tested if Unsure
Because many STIs have no symptoms, testing is the only way to know for sure — and it brings clarity and peace of mind.
STIs We Test & Treat
Genital Warts (HPV)
Soft growths around the genital or anal area caused by the human papillomavirus, treated discreetly and effectively.
Genital Herpes (HSV)
Painful blisters or sores caused by the herpes simplex virus, managed to control outbreaks and reduce transmission.
Chlamydia
A very common bacterial STI that often has no symptoms - easily detected with testing and cured with treatment.
Gonorrhoea
A bacterial infection that can affect the genitals, throat and other areas, diagnosed by testing and treated with medication.
Syphilis
A bacterial STI that can cause sores and rashes, fully treatable when caught early through screening.
HIV Screening & Advice
Confidential HIV testing, advice and onward referral for care, in a private and judgement-free setting.
Our Approach
At DSH Medical Group, we believe that effective treatment is more than just prescribing medication — it is about understanding the root cause, providing personalised care, and partnering with you for long-term skin health.
Treat the Root Cause, Not Just the Symptoms
We believe that lasting improvement begins with identifying why the condition occurs. Our doctors take time to understand your medical history, lifestyle, and environmental factors. When necessary, investigations such as blood tests or allergy testing may be recommended to help identify potential triggers, allowing treatment to target the underlying cause rather than simply suppressing symptoms.
Personalised, Safe & Effective Treatment
Every patient's skin is unique. We develop an individualised treatment plan based on your specific condition, which may include:
- Customized topical formulations
- Safe and gradual tapering regimens
- Targeted occlusion techniques and adjunctive therapies
- Practical skincare recommendations
Our priority is always to provide treatment that is safe, effective, evidence-based, and affordable.
Continuous Follow-Up for Long-Term Control
Skin conditions often change over time, and treatment should evolve accordingly. Our doctors monitor your progress closely and adjust your treatment plan whenever necessary to achieve better control, minimise relapses, and deliver lasting results.
Professional Medical Advice Without Hard Selling
Your health always comes first. We do not believe in unnecessary treatments or expensive product sales. Every recommendation we make is based on your medical needs, with the goal of providing the most appropriate and beneficial care for your condition.
Empowering Patients Through Education
Successful treatment is a partnership between doctor and patient. We believe that helping you understand your condition is just as important as prescribing the right medication. Our doctors will explain:
- Why your skin condition occurs or recurs
- How to reduce triggers and prevent flare-ups
- How to care for your skin correctly
- What to expect throughout your treatment journey
Because when patients understand their condition, they are better equipped to achieve healthier skin and enjoy long-term results.
STI Care Options Explained
Care is confidential and tailored to you — from finding out what is going on to treating it and preventing it from coming back.
Testing & Diagnosis
Confidential testing to detect sexually transmitted infections accurately — including those with no symptoms — so treatment is targeted to your exact diagnosis.
Personalised Medical Treatment
Bacterial infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis are treated with medication, while viral ones like herpes are managed long-term. Your doctor recommends the right plan for you.
Prevention & Partner Care
Clear advice on protecting yourself and your partners, repeat testing where useful, HPV vaccination guidance, and onward referral for specialised care when needed.
Reducing the Risk of STIs
Simple steps lower your risk and help stop infections spreading.
- Use barrier protection. Condoms greatly reduce the risk of most STIs when used correctly and consistently.
- Get tested regularly. If you are sexually active, routine testing catches infections early — even when there are no symptoms.
- Complete your full treatment. Finish any prescribed course, even if symptoms settle quickly.
- Tell recent partners. Letting partners know means they can get tested and treated too.
- Avoid sex until cleared. Wait until your doctor confirms it is safe, to avoid passing on an infection.
- Consider HPV vaccination. It protects against the strains that cause most genital warts and related cancers.

STD & STI FAQs
The questions patients ask us most — answered clearly and discreetly.
Book an Appointment- Most STDs spread through sexual contact, not kissing. A few infections, such as herpes (cold sores), can pass through kissing if sores are present, but the common STDs are not spread this way. If you are unsure, a quick check puts your mind at ease.

- Yes - this is very common. Many STDs, including chlamydia and HIV, can be present for a long time with no symptoms at all. The only way to know for sure is to get tested.
- It depends on the infection, as each has a window period before it shows on a test. Your doctor will advise the right timing for you - and may recommend a repeat test to be certain.
- Yes, genital herpes is a common STI caused by the herpes simplex virus. It cannot be cured, but treatment controls outbreaks and reduces the chance of passing it on. (Note: chickenpox, despite also being caused by a herpes-family virus, is not an STD.)
- STIs can cause genital warts, sores or blisters, rashes, itching, redness or unusual lumps. Because these can look like other skin conditions, a proper assessment is the best way to know what is going on.
